about

This is not so much a collection of songs by Elvis as music inspired by the Faustian life story of this cultural icon. How the million-selling rockabilly artist made a devil's pact to become a superstar in Hollywood and Las Vegas, only to have to give up his soul at Graceland.

Enjoy the drumless line-up, with the devilish Michael Moore on clarinet and sax, the demonic Ed Verhoeff on guitar and the soul-devouring Peter Tiehuis on guitar, together with the Great Satan Paul Berner on double bass, as they translate this American story. A profound journey of discovery in music rich in atmosphere and emotion.

(This is an album originally released on CD in 2013.)

Reviews:

An album about Elvis Presley and his manager Colonel Tom Parker, played by some of the best musicians in the Netherlands: bassist Paul Berner, horn player Michael Moore and guitarists Ed Verhoeff and Peter Tiehuis. Tranquil Americana with a touch of jazz and, above all, a lot of ‘atmosphere’. This is film music where you can fill in the images yourself. Music where every note counts is the most difficult kind to play. However, you can count on the Paul Berner Band to do just that. Berner wrote most of the songs, but there is also a lot to enjoy in the extremely stylish performances of Elvis classics such as That's Alright Mama and Heartbreak Hotel. Recommended!

Michiel Roelse, Gitarist magazine, December 2013

The power of 'Country Boy' lies in the tranquility of the overall sound and the nostalgia that gives the music a warm glow. Because the four musicians don't freak out anywhere and prefer to imbue their notes with a deliberate softness, there is a calmness which supports good storytelling. And although the 'Devil' in the subtitle undoubtedly refers to the demonic life of Elvis Presley, he does not appear anywhere on this 'Country Boy'. Elvis and his music are placed on a bed of rose petals here. And of course, the listener is too. Although this album contains no rock & roll fireworks, not a word is sung and only four jazz-related instruments are heard, it is definitely recommended that the seasoned Elvis fan listen to 'Country Boy'. A tribute and, at the same time, a fresh take, for Elvis Presley and his fans.

Rinus van der Heijden, Jazzenzo, December 2013

Bassist Paul Berner has been living and working in the Netherlands for years. In his own band, Berner professes his love for American music in a movingly honest way. This time Elvis Presley takes center stage, and the clever version of the often parodied 'Viva Las Vegas' makes it clear that this is an honest tribute. What Berner performs, together with his fellow countryman reed player Michael Moore and the two Dutch guitarists Ed Verhoeff and Peter Tiehuis, is the opposite of show music. Berner's deep, warm bass sound is the basis on which Tiehuis and Verhoeff play strikingly subtle and almost airy guitar parts, curling up like smoke from a recently extinguished fire. Moore plays the reeds as if he were a singer. It makes the music impressively intimate…not by attracting attention, but by engaging in an inspired and tender conversation.
